Steve grew up close to the woods and lakes in Athol, Massachusetts and got hooked on the outdoors stream trout fishing with his dad. His dream as a kid was to take off into the winter woods with toboggan and gear and his old L.L. Bean snow shoes. The dream finally materialized when he and his wife, Nancy, arrived in Ely in 1975 to work as limnologists for the EPA and later as instructors at Vermilion Community College. Piragis Northwoods Co. opened in 1979 and along with their daughter Elli, Steve and Nancy continue to manage the business- specializing in canoe trip outfitting and outdoor clothing and gear for all seasons.
